2027: Police Pledge to Protect Lives, Ensure Secure Environment for Voters

The Nigeria Police Force has pledged to protect lives and property and provide a secure environment for voters, candidates, electoral officials and other stakeholders during the 2027 general elections.

The commitment was made as preparations intensify for the next general elections, with security agencies expected to work with the Independent National Electoral Commission and other stakeholders to prevent violence and protect the integrity of the electoral process.

The police said election security remains a major responsibility and that adequate measures would be put in place to safeguard polling units, collation centres and other locations associated with the elections.

The Force is also expected to strengthen intelligence gathering and collaboration with other security agencies to identify potential threats before and during the elections.

The police said officers deployed for election duties would be expected to maintain professionalism and remain neutral in the discharge of their responsibilities.

The commitment comes amid concerns over election-related violence, intimidation, vote buying, destruction of electoral materials and other forms of disruption that have affected elections in parts of the country.

Security during elections is particularly important because voters must be able to exercise their constitutional rights without fear of attack, harassment or intimidation.

The police said personnel would be trained and adequately briefed ahead of the elections to ensure they understand their responsibilities and operate within the law.

The Force also called on political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders to conduct their activities peacefully and respect the rules governing the electoral process.

It urged members of the public to provide security agencies with credible information about planned violence, attacks or other activities capable of disrupting the elections.

The police further warned individuals and groups against using the election period to cause disorder, stressing that anyone found violating the law would face appropriate legal action.

As the 2027 elections approach, security agencies are expected to coordinate their operations with INEC and other relevant institutions to develop strategies for securing polling locations and protecting electoral personnel and materials.

The police said its priority would be to ensure that Nigerians can participate in the electoral process in a safe and orderly environment.
