2027: Northern Candidates Should Wait Till 2031 To Contest — Kano Gov

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has urged northern politicians seeking the presidency to wait until 2031 before pursuing the nation’s highest office.

Yusuf made the call while speaking at a political event in Kano, where he argued that Nigeria’s presidency should continue to rotate between the northern and southern parts of the country.

The governor urged northern political actors to support President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in the 2027 presidential election.

According to Yusuf, the North had already completed an eight-year presidential tenure under former President Muhammadu Buhari. He argued that the South should therefore be allowed to complete what he described as its own eight-year cycle before power returns to the North in 2031.

Yusuf’s position is based on an informal political understanding concerning rotation of the presidency between the two regions. The arrangement is a political position rather than a constitutional requirement, as Nigeria’s Constitution does not prescribe a North-South rotation of presidential power.

The governor has previously expressed support for Tinubu’s re-election, urging Nigerians to back the President’s second-term ambition.

His latest comments come as political parties and presidential aspirants intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Yusuf maintained that northern politicians should exercise patience and allow the current political arrangement to continue until 2031.

His comments add to an ongoing debate among political leaders over zoning, power rotation and the regional distribution of presidential power ahead of the 2027 election.
