2027: Naval Chief Urges Military Personnel to Remain Apolitical, Professional

Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has urged military personnel to remain apolitical, non-partisan and professional as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Abbas gave the warning on Saturday while addressing personnel during the Nigerian Navy’s Third Quarter Route March 2026.

Represented by the Director of Manning at Naval Headquarters, Rear Admiral Kolawole Oguntuga, the naval chief reminded personnel that the Armed Forces had a constitutional responsibility to support the democratic process within the law.

He urged officers and ratings to remain neutral and avoid conduct or associations that could create the impression that the military was supporting any political party or candidate.

The naval chief stressed that personnel must carry out their responsibilities in accordance with the Constitution, relevant laws, professional ethics and established military regulations.

He said professionalism and discipline were particularly important during election periods, when security personnel could face pressure from political actors and other groups.

Abbas also emphasised the importance of maintaining public confidence in the Armed Forces, noting that military personnel must conduct themselves in a manner that protects the credibility of the institution.

The Navy chief’s warning comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with security agencies expected to play supporting roles in maintaining a peaceful electoral environment.

He urged personnel to remain physically and operationally prepared for their duties, while ensuring that any election-related assignment was carried out within the limits of the law.

The Chief of Naval Staff has previously stressed the importance of professionalism in military operations, including the Navy’s responsibilities in protecting Nigeria’s maritime domain.

The Navy has also continued operations against crude oil theft, illegal mining and other forms of economic crime in Nigeria’s waterways.

Abbas said military personnel must continue to demonstrate discipline and respect for human dignity regardless of the circumstances in which they are deployed.

His position is consistent with recent calls by senior military authorities for personnel involved in election security to maintain neutrality, professionalism and respect for constitutional authority.

As preparations for the 2027 elections continue, the Armed Forces are expected to operate in support of civil authorities under established constitutional and operational arrangements, while the Nigeria Police Force remains the primary agency responsible for maintaining public order during elections.
