2027: If Tinubu Wins, We’ll Retire From Politics — Amaechi Tells ADC Leaders
Amaechi urges ADC leaders to intensify grassroots mobilisation, warning that a Tinubu victory could end their political careers.
The Vice-Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Rotimi Amaechi, has urged party leaders to intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Amaechi, a former Rivers State governor and Minister of Transportation, made the call while speaking at the ADC National Women League Conference in Abuja on Wednesday.
He warned that members of the opposition leadership could be forced into political retirement if President Bola Tinubu wins the 2027 presidential election.
Amaechi urged ADC women to return to their states and wards and mobilise voters for the party, stressing that the opposition would need strong grassroots support to challenge the All Progressives Congress.
He recalled how the APC defeated the Peoples Democratic Party at the federal level in the 2015 election, saying women played an important role in the mobilisation effort at the time.
Amaechi urged ADC supporters to repeat such grassroots mobilisation by engaging voters directly in their communities.
He said the party should not take any electoral area for granted and called on women to work with their husbands, families and communities to encourage participation in the elections.
The former governor also encouraged party members to target significant numbers of votes from individual wards rather than focusing only on whether the party wins particular wards.
He said he would personally participate in campaign activities across several states, including Kebbi, Adamawa, Rivers and Delta, as the election approaches.
Amaechi also linked the presidential contest to state-level elections, arguing that the party would need strong support from governors and political structures across the country to implement its programme if elected.
He told the women that the political stakes were high for the ADC leadership and urged them to begin mobilisation immediately rather than waiting until the election period.
“If APC wins the 2027 elections, we are retired from politics,” Amaechi said, according to reports of his remarks.
He therefore challenged party members to return to their constituencies and build support for ADC candidates at the grassroots.
Amaechi’s comments come as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with opposition parties seeking to strengthen their structures and mobilise supporters across the country.
The ADC has positioned itself as part of the opposition movement seeking to challenge the APC in the presidential and other elections.
Amaechi urged the party’s women leaders to remain active in their communities and contribute to the mobilisation effort, saying their participation would be important to the party’s campaign strategy.
