2027: If Tinubu Loses FCT, Rivers, I Will Resign As Minister — Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he will resign from office if President Bola Tinubu loses the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State in the 2027 presidential election.

Wike made the declaration on Wednesday during an engagement with leaders and members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja.

The minister said his continued stay in office would depend on his ability to deliver electoral support for Tinubu in the two areas he considers politically significant to him.

Wike said Rivers State is his home, while the FCT is where he currently works as minister, adding that he would take responsibility if the President fails to secure victory in both areas.

“If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here,” Wike said.

He further stated that if Tinubu loses both Rivers and the FCT at the presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027, he would announce his resignation the following day.

“If I lose FCT, I’m not supposed to be FCT Minister. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT,” he said.

Wike also disclosed plans to mobilise a multi-party political coalition in the FCT ahead of the election.

He said the coalition would bring together supporters across different political platforms to work towards victory for Tinubu and other candidates backed by the group.

The minister specifically endorsed Tinubu for the presidency and former FCT Senator Philip Aduda for the Senate.

He also said the coalition would support candidates for the House of Representatives and other elective positions.

“In the FCT, we are running a unified coalition across parties to deliver results,” Wike said.

His declaration comes amid increased political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with parties and political figures already organising campaigns and alliances across the country.

Wike has continued to publicly support Tinubu’s re-election bid despite remaining a member of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The FCT minister has in recent weeks intensified his political engagements in Abuja and Rivers State, while also defending his involvement in electoral mobilisation.

The 2027 presidential election is scheduled for January 16, according to the timeline cited by Wike in his remarks.
