2027: Bamidele Warns Politicians Against Hate Speech, Violence
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele urges politicians to shun hate speech and violence as preparations intensify for 2027 elections.
Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has warned political parties and their candidates against inflammatory rhetoric, hate speech and actions capable of threatening Nigeria’s peace ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Bamidele, who is also Chairman of the South-West Caucus in the National Assembly, made the call in his Independence Day message marking Nigeria’s 66th anniversary.
He urged political actors to conduct their campaigns peacefully and in accordance with the Electoral Act 2026 and the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
The Senate Leader acknowledged the constitutional right of politicians to pursue their political ambitions and campaign for electoral support but stressed that such rights must be exercised within the boundaries of the law.
He cautioned against statements and actions capable of aggravating political tensions or triggering unrest and ethno-religious violence before, during and after the 2027 elections.
Bamidele said political ambition should not be pursued at the expense of national peace, unity and stability.
He urged political parties and candidates to approach the coming electoral contest with decorum, patriotism and restraint, stressing the need for issue-based campaigns focused on policies, programmes and the aspirations of Nigerians.
According to him, Nigeria’s political activities should reflect the vision of the country’s founding fathers, who sought to build a united, democratic and prosperous federation capable of playing a leading role in Africa and the wider world.
The Senate Leader further reminded politicians that Nigeria remains a collective heritage that must be protected regardless of political affiliation or ambition.
He said political activities should strengthen rather than undermine the country’s unity and democratic institutions.
Bamidele also called on parties and candidates to ensure that their campaign messages and policy agendas reflect the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians.
He urged political actors to avoid rhetoric that could divide citizens along ethnic, religious or regional lines as preparations for the elections gather momentum.
The lawmaker’s warning comes as political parties and aspirants intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.
He stressed that the pursuit of political office should remain within the framework of democratic values and lawful political competition.
Bamidele urged all political actors to prioritise peaceful campaigns and responsible communication, saying no political ambition should be allowed to threaten the peace and stability of the country.
