2026 World Cup: Ronaldo Leaves Portugal Coach Decision to Federation After Martinez Exit
Cristiano Ronaldo says appointing Portugal’s next coach is not his decision, thanking Roberto Martinez for his contributions after the team’s World Cup exit.
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has said the decision on who succeeds Roberto Martinez as national team coach rests entirely with the Portuguese Football Federation following Portugal’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Portugal’s campaign came to an end after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16, a match that also marked Ronaldo’s final appearance for the national team.
Speaking after the game, the veteran forward declined to comment on speculation linking former Al Nassr coach Jorge Jesus with the vacant position, insisting it was not the appropriate time to discuss the issue.
Ronaldo said responsibility for appointing the next coach belongs to Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.
“These decisions are not made by me. The president will make the decision he wants. It’s not the right time to talk about it,” Ronaldo said.
Martinez confirmed after the defeat that his contract had expired and that the clash against Spain would be his final match in charge of Portugal.
The Spanish coach said leading Portugal had been a memorable experience and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to manage one of Europe’s leading national teams.
Despite the disappointing World Cup exit, Ronaldo paid tribute to Martinez, praising his professionalism and contributions during his time with the national side.
The five time Ballon d’Or winner said he enjoyed working with the Spaniard and thanked him for helping Portugal achieve success during his tenure.
“What I want to say to the gaffer is that he was a person I loved working with. He is a great coach and what he did for Portugal was very important,” Ronaldo said.
“He won a title, and I value it very much. It shows how good you have to be to win a title for Portugal. I just have to say thank you and wish you all the best.”
Martinez had recently been linked with a possible move to Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr, where Ronaldo currently plays.
However, the club has since appointed former Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou as its new head coach.
Portugal will now begin the search for a new manager as preparations start for upcoming international competitions, while Ronaldo’s retirement from international football brings an end to one of the most celebrated careers in the history of the national team.
