World Cup 2026: Rodri Apologises to Bernardo Silva After Portugal Exit
Rodri apologised to Bernardo Silva after their on field altercation during Spain’s World Cup victory over Portugal, admitting responsibility for his actions after the final whistle.
Spain midfielder Rodri has apologised to Portugal captain Bernardo Silva following a heated on field altercation during Spain’s 1-0 victory over Portugal in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The incident occurred after Mikel Merino scored a late winner to send Spain into the quarter finals, ending Portugal’s World Cup campaign in dramatic fashion.
Tensions flared in the closing moments of the match after Rodri celebrated a missed opportunity involving Silva, prompting a confrontation between the two midfielders.
Speaking to reporters after the game, the Ballon d’Or winner admitted his actions were inappropriate and accepted responsibility.
“I apologise to Bernardo Silva for celebrating his miss on that last action. It’s my fault,” Rodri said.
Both players previously played together at Manchester City, where they enjoyed a successful partnership and won several major trophies before going their separate ways.
Despite the emotional ending, Rodri’s apology is expected to ease tensions following the fiercely contested encounter, which ended Portugal’s hopes of progressing beyond the Round of 16.
