Troops of the Nigerian Army have intercepted 11 suspected individuals allegedly transporting materials believed to be used for the production of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.
Security sources revealed that the suspects—10 males and one female—were apprehended around 12:59 a.m. on Monday, April 27, by personnel of the 176 Guards Battalion stationed at Kuchiyako.
According to the sources, the suspects were intercepted along the Kuchiyako–Tipper Garage road while conveying the materials in a vehicle. Preliminary findings indicate that the items in their possession raised strong suspicion of potential use in assembling IEDs.
During initial questioning, the suspects reportedly claimed they were heading to mining sites in the Kabbin Mangoro area within Kuje to collect mineral resources. However, security operatives flagged inconsistencies in their explanation.
Items recovered from the suspects include explosive charges and three-and-a-half bags of yet-to-be-identified mineral substances, alongside other materials believed to be linked to explosive fabrication.
The suspects are currently being held in military custody as investigations continue to determine their intent and any possible connections to criminal or terrorist networks.
A senior officer from the Guards Brigade, who confirmed the development, assured that security forces remain vigilant and committed to safeguarding the Federal Capital Territory and its surrounding areas.
The interception underscores ongoing efforts by the military to counter emerging security threats and prevent potential attacks within Abuja and beyond.
