The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, which occurred on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, assuring the public that justice will be served.
Police spokesperson in Delta State, Bright Edafe, confirmed that an officer linked to the incident has been arrested and transferred to Abuja on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police for further investigation.
Providing details, Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, said preliminary reports indicated that officers attached to the Effurun Area Command acted on credible intelligence from Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway.
According to him, the suspect had been apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
Placid explained that while officers were trying to take the suspect into lawful custody, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in violation of police regulations, resulting in the suspect’s death.
Following the incident, police authorities ordered the immediate transfer of the officer and his team to Force Headquarters in Abuja. They are expected to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for internal review, alongside possible prosecution.
The Inspector-General of Police extended condolences to the family of the deceased, emphasizing that the case would be handled in accordance with the law. He also urged members of the public to remain calm while investigations and disciplinary processes continue.
Reaffirming its stance, the Nigeria Police Force stressed its zero tolerance for extra-judicial actions, abuse of authority, and misconduct that undermines public trust.
The incident has once again drawn attention to concerns about the use of force by security personnel, as authorities move to ensure accountability and transparency in handling the case.
