Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ireti Kingibe, has raised concerns that Nigeria’s 2027 general elections may be at risk due to alleged alterations in the Electoral Act.
Speaking in an interview, Kingibe warned that key provisions of the electoral reforms originally agreed upon by stakeholders may have been changed, a development she says could undermine the credibility of future elections.
The senator, who was part of the committee involved in electoral reform discussions, claimed that several agreed provisions were significantly modified after the drafting process.
According to her, the original reform framework was designed over a two-year period to strengthen transparency, improve electoral integrity, and ensure free and fair elections in the country.
She expressed concern that changes to the document could weaken public trust in the electoral system, especially as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
Kingibe also called for stronger safeguards in the electoral process, warning that without proper security measures and strict implementation of electoral laws, the credibility of future polls could be compromised.
Her comments add to ongoing national discussions about electoral reforms, voter confidence, and preparations ahead of the 2027 elections.
