The Inspector-General of Police, Rilwan Olutunji Disu, has ordered the dismissal and criminal prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of a civilian, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the IGP described the incident as “criminal, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable,” stressing that it does not reflect the values of the Nigeria Police Force.

He identified the principal officer in the incident as ASP Nuhu Usman, noting that his actions violated established procedures and Force Order 247 governing the use of firearms.

“This action was criminal, it was unprofessional, and it has no place in the Nigeria Police Force,” Disu said.

Following the incident, all officers involved were transferred from the Delta State Command to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where they underwent disciplinary proceedings.

Investigations by the Force Disciplinary Committee and the Orderly Room Tribunal confirmed breaches of operational guidelines and unlawful conduct. Both bodies recommended the dismissal of the officers and their prosecution for unlawful homicide.

The IGP said the recommendations have been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final ratification, after which the dismissed officers will be handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution.

Reaffirming the Force’s stance, Disu emphasised that misconduct by personnel would not be tolerated.

“No uniform is a license to kill,” he said, adding that the police remain committed to accountability and the rule of law.

He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be pursued transparently.

The police chief also urged the public to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, reiterating that the era of impunity within the Force is over.
