You Would Need a Wheelbarrow Load of Naira to Buy Tomatoes If We Had Not Acted — Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu has defended his administration’s economic reforms, claiming they helped prevent a worse rise in food prices and economic hardship.
President Bola Tinubu has defended his administration’s economic policies, saying Nigerians would have needed a wheelbarrow load of naira to purchase tomatoes if his government had failed to take corrective action.
Tinubu made the remark on Friday while addressing supporters at an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The President said his administration inherited serious economic challenges and had taken difficult decisions to stabilise the economy and prevent further deterioration.
Using the rising cost of food as an example, Tinubu argued that the situation could have been significantly worse without the government’s intervention.
He maintained that the economic reforms introduced by his administration were necessary to address longstanding structural problems and put the country on a path towards recovery.
The President also urged Nigerians to remain patient with his government, insisting that the measures being implemented would produce better economic conditions over time.
Tinubu’s comments come amid continued public concerns over the cost of living, particularly the prices of food, transportation and other essential goods.
Food inflation and the rising cost of basic commodities have remained major challenges for households across the country, placing pressure on family budgets and purchasing power.
The administration has repeatedly defended its economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidy and foreign exchange reforms, arguing that they are necessary to improve public finances and strengthen the economy.
However, opposition figures and economic stakeholders have continued to question the pace of recovery and the impact of the reforms on ordinary Nigerians.
Tinubu’s latest remarks form part of his efforts to defend his administration’s record as political parties begin preparations for the 2027 general election.
