You Can Get Away With Anything With Political Connections — Emir Sanusi Faults El-Rufai’s Detention
Emir Sanusi criticises El-Rufai’s detention, saying political connections can influence accountability and how justice is applied in Nigeria.
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has criticised the detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, saying Nigeria’s justice system should apply the law equally to everyone.
Sanusi made the remarks during an interview with Channels Television in Lagos while speaking about accountability, governance and unexplained wealth in Nigeria.
The former Central Bank of Nigeria governor said the country had a serious problem with selective accountability, arguing that people with strong political connections could sometimes avoid consequences for their actions.
His comments came amid ongoing controversy surrounding El-Rufai, who has faced scrutiny over allegations relating to his administration in Kaduna State.
Sanusi questioned why individuals with political influence could receive different treatment from ordinary citizens when allegations of wrongdoing arise.
He said the rule of law should not depend on a person’s political connections, social status or access to powerful individuals.
The Emir also stressed the importance of institutions being allowed to carry out their responsibilities independently, saying accountability should be based on evidence rather than political considerations.
El-Rufai has denied allegations of wrongdoing connected to his tenure as Kaduna governor and has challenged aspects of the legal proceedings against him.
The former governor has also criticised what he described as political persecution, while authorities involved in the investigations have maintained that due process is being followed.
Sanusi’s comments have added to the public debate over the treatment of former political office holders and the broader question of accountability in Nigeria.
He said a functioning justice system should ensure that individuals are treated according to the law regardless of their connections or influence.
The Emir’s remarks were made in the context of a wider discussion about corruption, unexplained wealth and the need for stronger institutions in Nigeria.
The controversy surrounding El-Rufai remains subject to ongoing legal and political developments, while the allegations against him have not been finally determined by a court.
