World Cup: Yamal, Mbappé Renew Rivalry in France, Spain Semi-final
Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé will renew their rivalry as Spain face France in Tuesday’s World Cup semi-final with a place in the final at stake.
Spain winger Lamine Yamal will renew his growing rivalry with France captain Kylian Mbappé when both sides clash in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday.
The highly anticipated encounter will see one of football’s brightest young stars face one of the game’s most accomplished World Cup performers, with a place in Sunday’s final at stake.
Mbappé, who lifted the World Cup with France in 2018 at just 19 years old, remains one of the tournament’s most influential players. He became only the second teenager after Brazilian legend Pelé to score in a World Cup final and has since established himself among the world’s elite forwards.
Yamal, meanwhile, is looking to emulate the French captain’s early success on the biggest stage. The Barcelona winger is making his World Cup debut after emerging as one of Europe’s most exciting young talents.
The teenager first captured global attention during UEFA Euro 2024, where he scored a spectacular goal against France in the semi-finals before helping Spain defeat England in the final. His outstanding performances earned him the Young Player of the Tournament award.
Tuesday’s semi-final presents another opportunity for Yamal to test himself against Mbappé after Spain’s victory over France at Euro 2024.
The build-up to the tournament was not without concern for the Spanish youngster, who feared he could miss the World Cup after suffering a hamstring injury during the closing stages of Barcelona’s domestic campaign.
“I was afraid it might be serious and, above all, that even if it wasn’t serious, I could suffer a setback and end up missing the World Cup,” Yamal said.
Having recovered in time for the tournament, the winger has played a key role in Spain’s impressive run to the last four, combining pace, creativity and composure beyond his years.
France, however, arrive with a squad rich in experience and tournament pedigree, led by Mbappé, who is chasing another World Cup title after guiding Les Bleus to glory in 2018 and finishing runner-up in 2022.
The winner of the semi-final will advance to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, where either England or Argentina await.
