World Cup 2026: Vampeta Criticises Neymar’s Inclusion in Brazil Squad
Former Brazil midfielder Vampeta has questioned Neymar’s place in the 2026 World Cup squad, arguing that selecting the injured forward denied another player the opportunity to represent the nation.
Former Brazil international Vampeta has criticised the decision to include Neymar in Brazil’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad, claiming the forward’s selection came at the expense of another player’s dream.
Neymar was named in manager Carlo Ancelotti’s final squad for the tournament despite concerns over his fitness.
The Santos forward missed Brazil’s opening match, a 1-1 draw against Morocco, after suffering a calf injury on May 17.
Speaking to Brazilian media outlet BNews, Vampeta questioned whether Neymar would be able to make a meaningful contribution during the competition.
The former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder argued that the severity of Neymar’s injury made his inclusion a risky decision, especially given the intensity and importance of the World Cup.
“[It] took the dream away from another player,” Vampeta said while discussing Neymar’s selection.
He added that Neymar had not featured since sustaining the injury and suggested that the forward would struggle to regain full fitness during the early stages of the tournament.
“Neymar played his last match on May 17. In the first 16 days, Neymar has zero chance of playing; he has no condition whatsoever to step in and perform with a grade-two calf injury,” he said.
The criticism comes as Brazil begin their campaign under Ancelotti, who included Neymar despite uncertainty surrounding his recovery.
Neymar remains one of Brazil’s most influential players, having played a key role for the national team over the years, but recurring injury concerns have affected his availability in recent major tournaments.
Brazil are aiming for a record-extending sixth World Cup title and will hope Neymar can recover in time to contribute as the competition progresses.
Vampeta’s comments have reignited debate in Brazil over whether reputation and past achievements should influence squad selections when players are struggling with fitness concerns.
