World Cup 2026: Haaland Scores Twice As Norway Defeat Iraq In Opener

Erling Haaland scored his first FIFA World Cup goals as Norway began their 2026 campaign with a convincing 4-1 victory over Iraq in their opening Group I match.

The Manchester City striker was the difference for Norway, scoring twice in the first half to help his side overcome a spirited Iraqi challenge in Boston.

Haaland opened the scoring in the 29th minute when he reacted quickly inside the box to convert a low cross and give Norway the advantage.

Iraq responded strongly and levelled the contest 10 minutes later through Aymen Hussein, who rose above defenders to head home a well-delivered cross.

However, Norway regained the lead before the break after a defensive error allowed Haaland to pounce and score his second goal of the night.

The brace took Haaland’s international tally to 57 goals in just 51 appearances for Norway, further highlighting his remarkable scoring record.

Norway extended their advantage in the second half when substitute Leo Ostigard headed in Martin Odegaard’s corner in the 76th minute.

The European side added a fourth goal deep into stoppage time after Hussein inadvertently turned Haaland’s header into his own net.

The victory moved Norway to the top of Group I on goal difference, level on three points with France, who defeated Senegal 3-1 earlier on Tuesday.

The result marked Norway’s return to the World Cup after 26 years, with their last appearance coming at the 1998 tournament in France.

Iraq, meanwhile, endured a difficult night despite competing at their first World Cup since 1986 after a lengthy qualification journey that lasted 21 matches over 867 days.

Norway will now face France in their next group match, with Haaland and his teammates hoping to continue their impressive start to the tournament.
