World Cup 2026: Curaçao Becomes Smallest Nation To Qualify For Tournament

Curaçao has been officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the smallest nation by population ever to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

The Caribbean island achieved the historic milestone after securing qualification for the 2026 tournament, with a population of just 156,115 people at the time they booked their place.

Guinness World Records presented the official certificate to the President of the Curaçao Football Federation, Gilbert Martina, during a ceremony in Houston, United States, days after the country made its World Cup debut.

The record previously belonged to Iceland, which qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup with a population of about 350,000.

According to Guinness World Records, Curaçao sealed qualification on November 19, 2025, after finishing top of their CONCACAF third-round qualifying group.

The team, popularly known as the “Blue Wave”, secured three wins and three draws from six matches to complete a remarkable qualification campaign.

Managed by Dutch coach Dick Advocaat, Curaçao secured their historic World Cup ticket after a goalless draw against Jamaica in Kingston, a result that confirmed their place at football’s biggest tournament.

The achievement represents a significant moment for the island nation, which has traditionally operated outside the spotlight of international football.

However, their debut campaign at the 2026 World Cup began with a difficult result as they suffered a 7-1 defeat in their opening match on June 14.

Despite the heavy loss, Curaçao’s qualification remains a landmark achievement, placing the country in football history and highlighting the growing global reach of the World Cup.
