Former Chelsea defender William Gallas has questioned the intense media hype surrounding Cole Palmer, arguing that expectations have risen far too quickly following the player's breakout campaign.

Palmer became the focal point of Chelsea's long-term project after his high-profile switch from Manchester City, enjoying a phenomenal debut season at Stamford Bridge that yielded 25 goals and earned him the prestigious PFA Young Player of the Year award. However, speaking to BetVictor, Gallas suggested that the English midfielder has struggled to sustain that world-class level of impact, pointing out that everyone in England was too quick to label him the "best player in the world" off the back of just one strong year.

The Frenchman emphasized that the ongoing issues at Stamford Bridge extend far beyond Palmer, criticizing the collective output of the entire squad. Gallas noted that while the strikers have barely scored enough goals, the backline has leakages that must be urgently addressed, explicitly urging the club hierarchy to pursue Manchester City's John Stones to inject leadership and stability into the defense.
