Why Nigerians’ Data Finishes Fast — MTN
MTN Nigeria has identified background apps, video streaming, automatic downloads and cloud backups as major causes of rapid data depletion.
MTN Nigeria has explained why mobile data bundles often run out faster than subscribers expect, pointing to video streaming, background applications, automatic updates and cloud backups as some of the major causes.
In its data management guidance, the telecommunications company said smartphone activities can consume data even when users are not actively browsing or using their devices.
According to MTN, applications such as TikTok and Instagram can use substantial amounts of data through autoplay videos, while streaming platforms may automatically load high-resolution content and preload subsequent videos.
The company also identified WhatsApp’s automatic media downloads and backups as potential contributors to rapid data consumption. Photos, videos and voice notes received through messaging applications can download automatically, while cloud services such as Google Photos and Apple’s iCloud may synchronise files in the background.
Automatic application and operating system updates can further reduce available data, particularly when users allow downloads over mobile networks. Background app activity, including refreshing feeds and synchronising information, can also contribute to consumption without the subscriber’s immediate knowledge.
MTN added that faster 4G and 5G connections can make data disappear more quickly because applications may load higher-quality videos and download larger files in less time. The speed of a network does not, by itself, determine how much data a particular file requires, but it can encourage heavier usage and faster downloads.
The company also warned that mobile hotspots can consume data rapidly when connected devices stream videos, download files or install updates. On iPhones, Wi-Fi Assist may switch to mobile data when a Wi-Fi connection becomes weak, potentially causing unexpected usage.
To help subscribers manage their bundles, MTN recommends checking individual app consumption through phone settings or the MyMTN NG application. It also advises users to disable unnecessary background activity, restrict automatic updates and backups to Wi-Fi, lower video quality and switch off hotspots when they are not needed.
Subscribers can also activate Low Data Mode on supported iPhones and review their active bundles, validity periods and renewal settings.
The Nigerian Communications Commission has similarly identified streaming, social media, video calls, automatic software updates and background synchronisation as common causes of data depletion.
MTN maintains that rapid data consumption does not automatically mean a network provider has deducted data improperly. However, subscribers who notice unexplained deductions are encouraged to review their usage records and contact customer care for an investigation.
The company provides data management assistance through its website, the MyMTN NG application and its virtual assistant, Zigi.
