Why Lamine Camara’s £47m Chelsea Transfer Collapsed At Last Minute — Agent

Senegal international Lamine Camara’s proposed £47 million move from Monaco to Chelsea collapsed dramatically on transfer deadline day after the French club pulled out of the agreement.

Camara had been identified as Chelsea’s replacement for Enzo Fernandez, who completed a £125 million move to Manchester City. Chelsea reached a £47 million agreement with Monaco, while the 22-year-old midfielder agreed a six-year contract and completed his medical.

However, Monaco ultimately refused to authorise the transfer, leaving Chelsea without the midfielder they had expected to sign.

Camara’s agent, former Premier League striker Diomansy Kamara, criticised the situation, arguing that African players must not be treated as financial assets in the transfer market.

Kamara said the circumstances surrounding Camara’s failed move raised wider questions about the treatment of African footballers.

He argued that transfers should not be viewed solely as agreements between clubs involving money and contracts.

The agent also called on football authorities to examine whether the transfer system provides sufficient protection for players. He questioned whether mandatory release clauses could create a fairer balance between clubs and players.

The collapse of Camara’s transfer was closely connected to Monaco’s attempt to sell striker Folarin Balogun to Everton. Monaco wanted a major sale and initially indicated that Camara would not be allowed to leave.

When Balogun’s move to Everton encountered problems following his medical, Monaco proceeded with the Camara negotiations with Chelsea. A deal was eventually agreed, and Camara completed his medical.

However, Everton’s pursuit of Balogun was subsequently revived before the transfer window closed. With Monaco no longer facing the same immediate need to sell, the club decided not to release Camara despite the agreement with Chelsea.

Chelsea were left deeply frustrated after the late reversal, particularly after allowing Fernandez to join Manchester City without securing his replacement.

For Camara, the failed transfer means he will remain at Monaco despite preparing to begin a new chapter in the Premier League this season.

Kamara has urged FIFA and other football authorities to consider reforms that would ensure players are properly heard and respected when major transfer decisions affecting their careers are made.
