Why I Returned Ogogo’s N25m After His Death — Ogun Imam
Ilaro Chief Imam explains how late actor Taiwo Hassan entrusted him with N25 million and why he returned it.
The Chief Imam of Ilaro, Ogun State, Sheikh Tajudeen Abiodun, has explained why he returned N25 million entrusted to him by late veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, following the actor’s death.
The cleric said the money was given to him by Ogogo before his death, with specific instructions on how it should be used. He clarified that the funds were not meant for mosque construction, as had been widely speculated.
According to the Imam, Ogogo contacted him while receiving treatment and entrusted him with the N25 million for the renovation of his grandfather’s house in Ogun State.
The cleric said he took precautions to ensure there would be clear documentation concerning the money. He explained the arrangement to one of his sons and instructed that the discussion be recorded in case anything unexpected happened.
He also informed Ogogo’s younger brother about the money and its intended purpose.
The Imam said he remained in contact with Ogogo during his final days and visited him while he was receiving treatment at the intensive care unit of LASU Hospital and later at St Nicholas Hospital.
Following Ogogo’s death and burial, the cleric said he waited seven days before meeting with the actor’s children and other members of the family.
During the meeting, he explained the circumstances surrounding the money and discussed what should be done with it. The family subsequently agreed that the N25 million should be transferred to Ogogo’s elder brother.
The Imam said he personally accompanied a family member to the bank to ensure that the transfer was completed.
His decision to return the money has attracted widespread commendation, with many praising him for demonstrating honesty and accountability at a time when the funds could easily have become the subject of dispute.
Nollywood actor Saidi Balogun also commended the cleric, describing his action as an example of integrity and responsible stewardship.
Ogogo died on August 23, 2026, at the age of 66, after battling stage-four cancer. He was buried the following day in Ilaro according to Islamic rites.
The veteran actor was widely respected for his contributions to Yoruba-language cinema as an actor, producer, director and screenwriter.
The Imam’s explanation has now provided further clarity on the circumstances surrounding the N25 million and the decision to return it to Ogogo’s family.
