‘We’ve Lost Everything’ — Akwa Ibom Indigenes in South Africa Appeal to Eno
Akwa Ibom indigenes in South Africa appeal to Governor Eno for help after devastating losses and worsening hardships abroad.
Akwa Ibom indigenes living in South Africa have appealed to Governor Umo Eno for urgent intervention after allegedly suffering significant losses and hardships in the country.
The group made the appeal while highlighting the difficulties faced by some members of the Akwa Ibom community, including financial challenges, business setbacks and concerns over their welfare.
The indigenes called on the state government to strengthen its engagement with Akwa Ibom citizens living outside Nigeria and establish mechanisms that would enable them to receive assistance when confronted with emergencies.
They expressed concern that some members of the community had invested substantial resources in businesses and other ventures but had lost their livelihoods, leaving them struggling to rebuild.
“We’ve lost everything,” the group reportedly said, appealing to the governor to consider their situation and provide support.
The appeal comes amid increasing calls for state governments to pay greater attention to citizens living abroad, particularly those who contribute to their home communities through investments, remittances and development initiatives.
The Akwa Ibom indigenes urged Governor Eno to create a dedicated channel through which members of the diaspora could communicate directly with the state government and seek assistance during difficult circumstances.
They also called for stronger collaboration between the government and Akwa Ibom associations abroad to identify members facing hardship and develop sustainable solutions to their challenges.
According to the group, support from the state government would not only assist affected individuals but also strengthen the relationship between the state and its citizens in the diaspora.
They appealed for assistance that could help affected members restart businesses, secure employment opportunities and regain financial stability.
The indigenes also urged the government to explore partnerships with relevant Nigerian diplomatic authorities in South Africa to improve welfare support and provide guidance to citizens experiencing difficulties.
They said many Nigerians abroad continue to contribute to the development of their communities at home despite the challenges they encounter in foreign countries.
The appeal therefore reflects concerns over the need for stronger diaspora engagement and welfare programmes at the state level.
Governor Eno’s administration has continued to promote development initiatives in Akwa Ibom, while encouraging citizens to participate in the state’s economic growth.
The indigenes expressed hope that their concerns would receive prompt attention and that the state government would take practical steps to support affected members of the community.
