We Feared Social Media Would Take Our Jobs, Says Jide Kosoko
Veteran actor Jide Kosoko says older entertainment practitioners initially feared social media would displace them but later adapted to the technology and used it to their advantage.
Veteran Nigerian actor Jide Kosoko has recalled that older practitioners in the entertainment industry initially feared social media would drive them out of business.
Kosoko, in an interview, said the emergence of social media created uncertainty among older professionals who were unfamiliar with the technology and its potential impact on the industry.
He said the practitioners eventually adapted to the new digital environment, with the support of younger colleagues who were more familiar with computers and emerging technologies.
“When social media came, we were afraid. Is this not going to kick us out of business? Is this not going to kick us out completely?” he said.
Kosoko, however, said the older generation was eventually able to use social media to its advantage.
He expressed appreciation for the support of younger colleagues who helped older practitioners understand and navigate the technology.
The actor said the experience demonstrated how changes in technology could initially create uncertainty but later provide new opportunities for professionals who adapted to them.
Reflecting on the emergence of artificial intelligence, Kosoko said he was yet to fully understand the technology.
“When I started seeing AI, I still don’t understand it till now,” he said.
His comments come amid the increasing use of social media, artificial intelligence and other digital technologies in Nigeria’s creative industry.
The technologies have changed how entertainers promote their work, reach audiences and interact with fans, while also introducing new challenges and opportunities for established practitioners.
