Vinícius Handed Four-Match Ban, to Miss Real Madrid’s Clásico Against Barcelona
Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior will miss four league matches, including the October 25 Clásico, after a red card.
Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior has been handed a four-match suspension by the Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary committee, ruling him out of the upcoming Clásico against Barcelona.
The Brazilian winger received the ban on Wednesday following his sending-off during Real Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Villarreal in La Liga on Saturday.
Vinícius was shown a straight red card after video assistant referee (VAR) intervention revealed that he had pulled the hair of Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba during an attacking move. A goal he had appeared to score was subsequently disallowed.
The disciplinary committee imposed a two-match suspension for the incident and added another two matches for his protests against the referee’s decision.
According to the disciplinary report, the hair-pulling incident occurred when the ball was not being contested between the two players. His reaction after the dismissal was also considered in determining the punishment.
The suspension means Vinícius will miss Real Madrid’s league fixtures against Sevilla, Barcelona, Racing Santander and Valencia.
His absence from the Clásico, scheduled for October 25 at Barcelona’s home ground, presents a setback for Real Madrid as the Spanish rivals prepare for one of the most anticipated matches of the season.
Vinícius has been a regular member of Real Madrid’s starting line-up this season, making his suspension particularly significant for the team’s attacking options.
Following the incident against Villarreal, the forward apologised to his teammates and Real Madrid supporters in a social media post.
The suspension applies to domestic league matches, meaning Vinícius remains eligible to feature in Real Madrid’s Champions League fixtures during the period.
Real Madrid reportedly considers the punishment excessive and is weighing an appeal against the decision.
The Clásico will take place as Barcelona and Real Madrid continue their contest for position in the La Liga standings. Barcelona entered the fixture period with a six-point advantage over their rivals, according to reports published after the disciplinary decision.
Vinícius is expected to return to domestic league action after serving the four-match ban, subject to any change resulting from an appeal.
