US, China Agree to Create Communication Channel for AI Incidents
The United States and China have agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel for artificial intelligence incidents and launch a dialogue on the risks and benefits of advanced AI.
The United States and China have agreed to establish a communication channel for artificial intelligence incidents as the two countries seek to manage risks associated with rapidly advancing technology.
The agreement was reached during a summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, with artificial intelligence among the issues discussed by the two leaders.
According to a White House fact sheet, the two countries also established the US-China Super Intelligence (SI) Dialogue to exchange views on the risks and benefits of advanced artificial intelligence.
The White House said the next exchange under the new dialogue would take place by November.
It added that Washington and Beijing had agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel for incidents involving the technology, although further details on how the mechanism would operate were not immediately disclosed.
Ahead of the summit, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had said American and Chinese officials were discussing a mechanism for notifying each other about AI-related threats. The discussions included the possibility of creating a formal channel for addressing incidents involving advanced AI systems.
Xi said the two countries had the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for the benefit of humanity, stressing that its development should remain under human control.
The agreement comes amid growing concerns over the potential security implications of increasingly capable AI systems and the need for greater communication between countries developing the technology.
The United States and China remain major competitors in AI development, while continuing to engage on mechanisms intended to reduce risks associated with the technology.
