US Backs Nigeria’s Acquisition of 12 Attack Helicopters

The United States has backed Nigeria’s planned acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters, saying the deal will strengthen Nigeria’s defence capabilities and support efforts to address security threats.

The US Mission in Nigeria disclosed this in a statement posted on its official X handle on Tuesday.

It said the planned acquisition reflected the continued security cooperation between both countries and their shared efforts to strengthen regional security.

“The planned acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper helicopters underscores both countries’ commitment to building Nigeria’s defence capabilities and addressing current and emerging threats together,” the mission said.

The United States also reaffirmed its continued security partnership with Nigeria in support of peace, security and stability across the region.

The acquisition forms part of a broader defence partnership involving military equipment, training and other programmes designed to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to tackle terrorism and other security challenges.

In April 2022, the US State Department approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to Nigeria involving 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters and related equipment at an estimated cost of $997 million.

The approved package included 28 T700-GE-401C engines, 2,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System guidance sections, logistics support and training.

The United States said the proposed sale was intended to improve Nigeria’s ability to contribute to shared security objectives, promote regional stability and enhance interoperability with the US and other Western partners.

The deal reached another milestone in September when the Nigerian Air Force signed an agreement with Bell Textron in Amarillo, Texas, for the acquisition of the helicopters.

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, led the Nigerian delegation to the signing ceremony and inspected the AH-1Z Viper production line during the visit.

Aneke said the acquisition would contribute to efforts to build a more capable and mission-ready Nigerian Air Force.

Nigeria’s acquisition of the AH-1Z helicopters follows earlier US military support, including the 2017 sale of 12 A-29 Super Tucano aircraft to Nigeria for $497 million.

According to the US State Department, Nigeria made its first payment for the 12 AH-1Z helicopters in August 2023.
