UNGA: Trump Replaces AI With ‘Super Intelligence’

US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will replace the term “artificial intelligence” with “super intelligence” in official government documents.

Trump made the announcement on Tuesday while addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he also defended his administration’s approach to the rapidly developing technology.

According to Trump, the word “artificial” makes the technology sound less real or capable than it is.

“From this point forward, all of United States documents, and hopefully the world’s, will be changed to use the much more accurate term ‘super’ as opposed to artificial,” he said.

Trump described the new terminology as “super intelligence”, abbreviated as SI, and said he hoped other countries would adopt the expression.

The US president also rejected calls for stronger international restrictions on the development of AI, saying the United States would encourage continued technological advancement.

He argued that AI could become more significant than the Industrial Revolution and the internet, while acknowledging that the technology would need to be monitored.

Trump said the US Department of Justice and other law-enforcement agencies would monitor developments and intervene when necessary.

His comments came amid growing international debate over the potential risks associated with increasingly advanced AI systems.

Several governments and technology leaders have called for stronger international cooperation and safety measures to address concerns about AI systems becoming more capable than humans in certain tasks.

The UN has also increased its focus on AI governance and its implications for international peace and security.

The term “superintelligence”, however, already has a specific meaning in AI research. It generally refers to a hypothetical form of artificial intelligence whose capabilities would substantially exceed those of the most capable human minds across a broad range of intellectual tasks.

It remains unclear whether Trump’s proposed terminology is intended to redefine the established technical meaning or simply replace the term “artificial intelligence” in official communications.

Trump also framed the development of the technology as a strategic competition, saying the country that leads in super intelligence would have a major global advantage.

His remarks added another dimension to the ongoing UNGA debate over how governments should balance technological innovation with safety, security and international cooperation.
