UN Condemns Attack on Humanitarian Facility in Libya
The United Nations has condemned the storming and ransacking of a humanitarian facility in Tripoli, where migrants were receiving services.
The United Nations has condemned the storming of a humanitarian facility in Libya’s capital, Tripoli, describing the incidents as deeply aggressive acts against staff and people accessing humanitarian services.
The UN said the facility was managed by one of its agencies, with the International Organisation for Migration confirming that the incidents occurred at its service centre in Tripoli.
Videos circulating on social media showed people forcing their way into the premises, ransacking furniture and driving occupants out of the facility.
The UN said the incidents occurred on Monday, while migrants were present at the centre.
It said Libyan authorities had taken action in response to the incident and were investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The UN stressed that such incidents must not be repeated, underscoring the need to protect humanitarian workers and people seeking assistance.
The organisation did not identify the specific UN agency involved in its initial statement, although the IOM confirmed that its Tripoli service centre was affected.
