UK Reaffirms Commitment to Deepen Defence, Security Partnership With Nigeria

The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening its defence and security partnership with Nigeria, as both countries seek to strengthen cooperation against terrorism, organised crime and emerging security threats.

The commitment forms part of the broader Nigeria-UK Strategic Partnership, which provides a framework for collaboration on defence, intelligence sharing, maritime security, cyber threats and regional stability.

At the Fourth UK-Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership Dialogue held in Abuja on June 23 and 24, 2026, both countries agreed to expand cooperation based on mutual accountability and the implementation of agreed commitments.

The discussions were co-chaired by Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the United Kingdom’s National Security Adviser, Jonathan Powell. Senior officials from both governments participated in the meeting, which examined domestic and regional security challenges.

According to the joint communiqué published by the UK government, the partnership has recorded progress in supporting Nigeria’s armed forces and security institutions, strengthening counter-terrorism efforts and improving responses to organised crime.

The United Kingdom also renewed its long-term commitment to supporting Nigeria’s armed forces through military training, technical assistance and the development of operational capabilities.

Specific areas of cooperation include countering improvised explosive devices and uncrewed aerial systems, strengthening military doctrine and exploring opportunities to develop special operations capabilities.

Both countries also agreed to deepen collaboration on maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, where piracy, illicit maritime activities and other transnational crimes threaten regional stability and commercial shipping.

The partnership further covers intelligence exchange, cyber security and efforts to counter hybrid threats, including cyberattacks, disinformation and foreign information manipulation.

On counter-terrorism, Nigeria and the UK agreed to strengthen coordination among security agencies, improve intelligence sharing and enhance crisis preparedness. The UK also pledged continued support for Nigeria’s efforts to improve aviation security at Lagos and Abuja airports.

The two governments additionally discussed measures to tackle fraud and illicit financial flows, including cooperation on asset recovery, organised financial crime and the oversight of virtual assets.

Regional security featured prominently in the dialogue, with both countries expressing concern over the deteriorating security situation in the Sahel and its implications for West Africa.

They reaffirmed the importance of regional cooperation and Nigeria’s engagement with neighbouring countries and regional institutions to address cross-border threats.

The partnership also emphasises human rights-centred approaches to security, civilian harm mitigation and accountability in military and law enforcement operations.

To ensure progress, officials from both countries were tasked with implementing agreed actions and monitoring outcomes ahead of the fifth Security and Defence Partnership Dialogue, scheduled to be hosted by the United Kingdom in 2027.

The renewed commitment comes amid continuing security challenges in Nigeria, including insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and organised criminal activities.

Both governments have maintained that sustained cooperation, improved institutional capacity and effective intelligence sharing are essential to addressing these threats and strengthening security across Nigeria and the wider West African region.
