The University of Ibadan has introduced new guidelines governing the collection of Statements of Result and certificates, warning that certificates left unclaimed for more than 10 years will be liable to shredding.

The new rules were contained in a special bulletin dated September 15, 2026, and signed by the university’s Registrar, Mr Ganiyu Saliu.

Under the guidelines, graduates are required to collect their Statements of Result within six months of receiving notification that the documents are ready.

Those who fail to collect their Statements of Result within the stipulated period will be required to pay a non-collection penalty of N2,500 before the documents are released.

The university said Statements of Result would remain valid for two years from their respective dates of issuance and would serve as interim records until graduates collect their certificates.

It noted that certificates remained the university’s official and permanent evidence of graduation and qualification, adding that graduates were expected to collect them within the two-year validity period of their Statements of Result.

The institution further stated that certificates would be available for collection from the date of convocation until one year afterwards, during which graduates would pay a statutory fee of N7,500 for issuance and collection.

Certificates collected after the initial one-year period would attract additional non-collection penalties.

According to the university, certificates collected after one year but within five years would attract a N25,000 penalty, while those collected after five years but within 10 years would attract a N50,000 penalty.

It warned that certificates that remained uncollected beyond 10 years would be liable to shredding.

The university clarified that the non-collection penalties were separate from the N7,500 statutory certificate issuance and collection fee.

UI urged graduates and other relevant stakeholders to take note of the new requirements and comply with the collection timelines to avoid penalties and the possible loss of unclaimed certificates.
