UBA Graduates 374 Young Professionals, Reinforces Commitment to Youth Development and Talent Pipeline
United Bank for Africa (UBA) has graduated 374 participants from its Young Professionals Programme, with 312 offered full-time employment as the bank continues to invest in building Nigeria’s next generation of banking leaders.
Bank for Africa (UBA) has graduated 374 young Nigerians from its prestigious Young Professionals Programme (YPP), marking another significant milestone in the bank’s long-standing commitment to building a skilled, innovative, and future-ready workforce while contributing to the reduction of youth unemployment in the country.
The graduation ceremony, held on Monday at the bank’s iconic headquarters in Lagos, brought together executives, mentors, parents, and the fresh graduates who had successfully completed an intensive 12-month programme that combined rigorous classroom learning, hands-on banking experience, digital skills training, leadership development, and ethical banking principles.
UBA Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Oliver Alawuba, described the graduating class as “some of the brightest and most determined young talents” he had seen in recent years. He noted that the bank deliberately selects candidates from diverse backgrounds across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to ensure national representation and inclusivity.
“These young professionals represent the future of not just UBA, but the Nigerian banking industry and the broader economy,” Alawuba said. “We are not merely training bankers ,we are developing leaders who will drive innovation, champion digital transformation, and uphold the highest standards of integrity in financial services. This programme is a core part of our promise to invest in Nigeria’s greatest asset ,its youth.”
The Young Professionals Programme is widely regarded as one of the most competitive and comprehensive graduate training schemes in Nigeria’s financial services sector. Selected candidates undergo a structured curriculum that covers retail banking, corporate and commercial banking, risk management, compliance, fintech, data analytics, customer experience, and sustainable banking practices.
Participants also receive mentorship from senior executives, exposure to international operations through UBA’s pan-African network spanning 20 countries, and practical experience across various departments. The programme places strong emphasis on character, emotional intelligence, and ethical decision-making , values the bank believes are essential for long-term success in the industry.
Of the 374 graduates, 312 have already been offered full-time employment with UBA, while others have been supported in securing opportunities within the bank’s ecosystem of partners and fintech companies. The bank said it remains committed to absorbing the majority of high-performing participants into its permanent workforce.
The graduation comes at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with high youth unemployment and a significant skills mismatch in the labour market. According to recent National Bureau of Statistics data, youth unemployment remains above 40 percent in many parts of the country, with millions of graduates struggling to find relevant employment.
UBA’s investment in structured graduate training is therefore being viewed not just as a corporate talent strategy but as a meaningful contribution to national development. Industry observers note that banks like UBA, which have maintained robust learning and development programmes even during economic downturns, are playing a vital role in building the human capital needed for a modern, digital-first economy.
The bank’s Group Head of Human Resources, Mrs. Abiola Aderonke, revealed that the 2026 cohort was particularly strong in digital skills, data analytics, and sustainable finance , areas the bank believes will drive its growth in the coming years.
“We are seeing a new generation of professionals who are not only technically competent but also deeply committed to ethical banking and customer-centric innovation,” she said. “Many of them have already contributed ideas that are being implemented across our digital banking platforms.”
Several members of the graduating class shared their experiences. One graduate, Miss Fatima Yusuf from Kano State, said the programme transformed her from a fresh graduate with little practical experience into a confident banking professional ready to make an impact.
“I came in knowing very little about real-world banking,” she said. “Today, I have skills in data analytics, customer experience management, and digital lending. More importantly, I have learned the value of integrity and service. UBA didn’t just give me a job — it gave me a purpose.”
Another graduate, Mr. Emeka Okoro from Enugu, credited the programme with helping him overcome initial self-doubt and develop leadership capabilities. “The mentorship, the exposure, and the high standards expected of us pushed me to grow beyond what I thought was possible,” he said.
UBA has run its Young Professionals Programme for over 15 years and has produced thousands of alumni, many of whom now occupy senior positions within the bank and across the African financial services industry. The bank says it will continue to scale the programme, with plans to recruit even larger cohorts in the coming years as it expands its digital and pan-African operations.
As Nigeria’s economy continues to evolve toward greater digitalisation, financial inclusion, and diversification away from oil, initiatives such as UBA’s YPP are increasingly being recognised as vital pipelines for developing the talent the country needs.
For the 374 young professionals who graduated this week, the ceremony marked not just the end of a training programme but the beginning of what the bank hopes will be long and impactful careers in building a stronger, more inclusive Nigerian and African economy.
