U-20 WWC: Falconets Shift Focus to China After Spain Defeat — Aduku

Nigeria’s Falconets have shifted their attention to their second Group F match against China at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Spain in their opening game.

The Falconets struggled to impose themselves against the reigning European champions at the Stadion Sosnowiec, conceding a goal in each half as Spain secured all three points.

Marisa García opened the scoring for Spain in the 13th minute, while substitute Alba Cerrato doubled the advantage in the 73rd minute with a left-footed finish.

Nigeria struggled to create clear opportunities throughout the encounter, with Precious Oscar coming closest when she fired narrowly wide from close range late in the match.

Head coach Moses Aduku admitted that his team failed to produce the performance expected of them but remained confident that the Falconets could recover from the setback.

“We did not come to the party today, we did not play,” Aduku said after the match.

However, the coach stressed that Nigeria still had two group matches to play and expressed confidence that the team would improve and qualify for the knockout stages.

The Falconets will now face China PR on Thursday, September 10, before completing their Group F campaign against New Caledonia on September 13.

The defeat has increased the importance of the China fixture, with Nigeria needing a positive result to strengthen their chances of progressing from the group.

Aduku is expected to work on several areas exposed during the Spain match, particularly the team’s attacking connections, midfield control and finishing.

The Falconets were unable to consistently provide quality service to their forwards against Spain and also struggled to respond after falling behind.

Nigeria will need a sharper and more assertive performance against China, particularly in possession and in the final third.

Despite the setback, the Falconets remain among Africa’s most successful teams at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Nigeria have finished runners-up twice, in 2010 and 2014, and have regularly reached the latter stages of the competition.

Aduku’s immediate task is now to help his players put the Spain result behind them and produce a strong response against China.

With two matches remaining, the Falconets’ qualification hopes remain alive, but Thursday’s encounter has become crucial to their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.
