Tunisia Sack Head Coach Sabri Lamouchi After 5-1 World Cup Humiliation
Tunisia have sacked coach Sabri Lamouchi after a crushing 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their 2026 World Cup opener.
Tunisia have dismissed head coach Sabri Lamouchi following the national team’s crushing 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Tunisian Football Federation announced the decision less than 24 hours after the heavy Group F loss, making Lamouchi the first manager to be sacked during the tournament. The federation reportedly held an emergency meeting after the defeat, with officials concluding that a change in leadership was necessary to revive the team’s campaign.
Tunisia entered the World Cup with hopes of progressing beyond the group stage, but their opening performance fell far below expectations. Sweden dominated the contest from start to finish, exposing defensive weaknesses and leaving Tunisia facing an uphill battle in their remaining group matches.
The result triggered widespread criticism from fans and football analysts, many of whom questioned the team’s preparation and tactical approach. Supporters expressed disappointment over the manner of the defeat, which is among Tunisia’s heaviest losses in World Cup history.
Lamouchi, 54, was appointed as Tunisia’s head coach in January 2026 following the country’s disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaign. The former international midfielder was tasked with rebuilding the squad and guiding the North African nation to a strong World Cup showing.
However, his tenure proved short-lived. He managed only five matches in charge before the federation decided to end his contract. During his brief spell, Tunisia recorded mixed results, but the World Cup defeat to Sweden ultimately proved decisive.
The federation is expected to announce an interim coach in the coming days as Tunisia prepare for their next Group F fixture. Officials remain hopeful that a change on the bench can help the team recover and keep alive its chances of reaching the knockout stages.
Despite the setback, Tunisia still have opportunities to improve their standing in the group, but they will need significantly better performances in their remaining matches to avoid an early exit from the tournament.
