World leaders have gathered in New York for the high-level segment of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, with the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran and conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine expected to feature prominently in discussions.

United States President Donald Trump, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and French President Emmanuel Macron were among the leaders scheduled to address the assembly on Tuesday.

The meeting comes as the war involving the United States, Israel and Iran approaches its seventh month, with diplomatic efforts to revive negotiations continuing alongside renewed concerns over military escalation.

Trump has said he remains open to diplomacy while considering his options over the conflict, while Iran has conveyed conditions for renewed talks through Qatari mediators.

The conflict has also affected regional security and energy supplies, with disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz contributing to concerns over global oil markets and shipping.

Leaders of the six Gulf Cooperation Council states were also scheduled to meet Trump on the sidelines of the General Assembly to discuss regional security and the consequences of the conflict.

Qatar, which has been involved in mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran, has called for respect for national sovereignty and an end to cycles of escalation in the region. Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani has also warned of the wider economic consequences of the conflict.

Beyond the Middle East, the General Assembly is expected to address Russia’s war in Ukraine and the growing impact of artificial intelligence.

The gathering provides an opportunity for governments to present their positions on major international issues and hold bilateral discussions on security, diplomacy, trade and development.

The high-level meeting will continue throughout the week, with representatives from member states scheduled to deliver national statements and participate in diplomatic engagements on the sidelines of the assembly.
