US President Donald Trump has announced that his envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, will travel to Moscow and Kyiv with a proposal aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

Trump said the two negotiators would assess whether meaningful progress towards a peace agreement could be achieved after months of diplomatic stalemate.

“I sent Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, two great negotiators. They’ve done a great job, and we sent them over to see whether or not we can get something done,” Trump said.

He said the envoys would take a proposal to end the war but declined to disclose whether it would require Ukraine to give up territory, an issue that has previously complicated negotiations.

“We have an idea for peace,” Trump said.

According to reports, Witkoff and Kushner are expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday before travelling to Kyiv to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday.

The visit will mark the first time the two US negotiators travel to Kyiv since Trump returned to office, although both have previously visited Moscow as part of Washington’s diplomatic efforts.

The latest peace initiative comes as Russia and Ukraine have intensified long-range missile and drone attacks, with civilian casualties rising amid the continued fighting.

Previous US-mediated negotiations have stalled, with major disagreements remaining over territory, Ukraine’s security arrangements and Russia’s demands.

Zelensky has indicated that Ukraine is prepared to pause air strikes during the envoys’ visit and has called on Moscow to reciprocate, although no formal ceasefire agreement has been announced.

The Kremlin has not publicly confirmed details of the planned meetings, while the United States hopes the renewed diplomatic push can break the deadlock and create a pathway towards ending the conflict.
