Trump Rules Out New Iran Attack Before US Midterm Elections

United States President Donald Trump has ruled out launching new attacks on Iran before the country’s midterm congressional elections on November 3, saying Washington is holding productive discussions with Tehran.

Trump made the announcement on Thursday in a post on his Truth Social platform, amid renewed concerns that the conflict could escalate before the elections.

“I want to make it clear to everybody that, while Iran is in very bad condition, both economically and militarily, and while the blockade will remain in full force and effect, we will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the midterm elections,” Trump wrote.

He added that the United States was having “productive discussions” with the Islamic Republic of Iran but did not provide details of the negotiations.

The announcement followed reports that the White House had asked the Pentagon to prepare options for possible military strikes against Iranian targets before the elections.

The possibility of renewed attacks had raised concerns about further disruption to global energy supplies, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic shipping route for oil and other commodities.

The conflict, which began in February after the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, has contributed to volatility in global oil markets and increased pressure on fuel prices.

Trump’s statement has offered some immediate reassurance to energy markets, although uncertainty remains over whether the diplomatic discussions will produce an agreement to end the conflict.

The United States and Iran have exchanged proposals in recent weeks aimed at ending hostilities and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. However, major differences remain over Iran’s nuclear programme and other security issues.

Iran has maintained that it will not abandon uranium enrichment or surrender its uranium stockpile, while Washington continues to demand significant restrictions on Tehran’s nuclear activities.

Trump’s decision to rule out an attack before the midterms comes as Republicans seek to retain their narrow majorities in Congress. Rising fuel prices and concerns about the cost of living have become politically sensitive issues ahead of the vote.

Despite ruling out an attack before November 3, Trump has not announced a comprehensive plan for ending the conflict. The United States has also maintained economic pressure on Iran through sanctions.

The situation remains fluid, with the prospects for a lasting settlement dependent on progress in negotiations and the positions taken by both governments.
