Trump Invites Putin to G20 Summit in Miami
US invites Vladimir Putin to Miami G20 summit, offering opportunity for talks with Trump and other world leaders.
The United States has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit scheduled to take place in Miami in December, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced.
Rubio disclosed the invitation on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, while speaking to reporters in New York following a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
According to Rubio, Washington sees Putin’s participation as an opportunity for the Russian leader to engage directly with US President Donald Trump and other world leaders.
“We hope that’s an invitation he’ll accept,” Rubio said, stressing the importance of dialogue between countries that have disagreements.
The G20 summit is scheduled for December in Miami and will be hosted by the United States. The meeting is expected to bring together leaders of the world’s major economies to discuss global economic and international issues.
Putin’s possible attendance would mark his return to an in-person G20 leaders’ summit after years of limited participation. Russia remains a member of the G20, although Putin has not attended an in-person summit since 2019.
The invitation comes as Washington continues diplomatic engagement with Moscow over the war in Ukraine. Trump has previously held talks with Putin and has indicated his willingness to engage with leaders with whom the United States has major disagreements.
Rubio said the United States remained open to further engagement, arguing that resolving international disputes requires direct communication.
The Kremlin has yet to publicly confirm whether Putin will attend the Miami summit. His participation could provide an opportunity for meetings with Trump and other participating leaders.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously indicated that he would be willing to attend the G20 summit if Putin also participates, potentially creating an opportunity for direct discussions involving the two leaders.
The invitation is likely to draw international attention because of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and the diplomatic divisions surrounding Moscow’s participation in major international forums.
The December summit will be held at Trump National Doral Miami, where leaders are expected to discuss economic cooperation and a range of global issues.
