Trump Congratulates Democrats on Midterm Victory, Says Iran War Played a Role
Trump congratulates Democrats on their midterm victories, acknowledging that the Iran war contributed to Republican losses and influenced voters’ decisions.
US President Donald Trump has congratulated the Democratic Party following its sweeping victory in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, describing the party’s campaign as a “good job” while acknowledging that the war involving Iran contributed to Republican losses.
Trump made the remarks during a telephone interview with Fox News on Tuesday night, after Democrats secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
“I think the Democrats did a good job. I really do. I think they did a good job. They fought hard,” Trump said.
The President also acknowledged that the conflict with Iran had influenced voters’ decisions, particularly because of its impact on fuel prices.
“I think a part of it was Iran, but at the same time, people understood the importance of what I’ve done with Iran,” he said.
Speaking about the economic consequences, Trump said voters were unwilling to bear the short-term financial burden of higher petrol prices, although he maintained that his actions against Iran were necessary.
The Republican Party suffered major setbacks in several contests, with Democrats winning key races and taking control of both chambers of Congress.
The outcome gives Democrats greater legislative influence during the remaining two years of Trump’s presidency, including the ability to block parts of his legislative agenda and scrutinise his administration.
Despite the scale of the defeat, Trump rejected the suggestion that the results represented a personal rejection of his leadership.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, he claimed Republicans would have won by a landslide if he had been on the ballot.
“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” he wrote.
Trump also said he was willing to accept the election results and work with Democrats, although he signalled that he would use his presidential veto power against legislation he opposed.
The results have intensified debate over the political and economic consequences of the Iran conflict, with rising energy costs emerging as a major issue during the midterm campaign.
