Trump Backs Ally Netanyahu Ahead of Israel’s Tight Election
US President Donald Trump has endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of the October 27 parliamentary election.
United States President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for re-election, throwing his support behind the longtime Israeli leader just days before the country’s closely contested parliamentary polls.
Trump announced his endorsement on Sunday, October 18, describing Netanyahu as a “great warrior prime minister” and a partner in confronting Iran. He said the Israeli leader had remained strong despite significant opposition.
In a message posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump gave Netanyahu his “complete and total endorsement” for another term as prime minister.
The endorsement comes ahead of Israel’s October 27 election, the country’s first national vote since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, triggered a regional conflict and reshaped the country’s security and political debate.
Netanyahu, who leads the right-wing Likud party, thanked Trump for his support in a post on X, describing the American president as a close partner and declaring that they would complete their shared mission.
The Israeli prime minister has highlighted his relationship with Trump as an important element of his campaign, particularly regarding their shared position on Iran and regional security.
However, the impact of the endorsement remains uncertain. Opinion polls cited by international media indicate that Netanyahu’s governing coalition faces difficulties securing a parliamentary majority, while opposition parties also face challenges in assembling a government.
Israel does not elect its prime minister directly. The leader who can secure the support of a parliamentary majority through coalition-building is positioned to form the government.
Trump’s intervention also comes amid disagreements between Washington and Jerusalem over aspects of Middle East policy, including Iran and efforts to address the region’s conflicts.
The US president has previously endorsed political candidates in other countries, departing from the longstanding practice of American presidents generally avoiding explicit support for foreign election contenders.
Netanyahu’s campaign is taking place against a backdrop of public debate over the government’s handling of national security, the wars involving Israel and the future direction of the country’s foreign policy.
The October 27 vote will determine the composition of Israel’s next parliament and could decide whether Netanyahu remains in office or an alternative political coalition takes power.
