Transfer: Awoniyi Bids Goodbye to Nottingham as Manager Confirms Striker Joining New Club
Taiwo Awoniyi has said goodbye to Nottingham Forest as he closes in on a permanent transfer to Coventry City.
Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has bid farewell to his teammates and supporters following the club’s 2-0 pre-season victory over Brest at the City Ground, with the Nigerian forward reportedly set to join Coventry City.
Forest manager Olivier Glasner confirmed that Awoniyi is expected to leave the club as the striker prepares for a new challenge after several difficult seasons in Nottingham.
The 27-year-old Nigerian international joined Forest from Union Berlin but has struggled to consistently reproduce the form that made him one of the club’s key attacking players.
Awoniyi, however, ended last season on a positive note, scoring three goals and providing two assists in his final six appearances as Forest secured their Premier League status.
His future at the club had become increasingly uncertain, particularly with Chris Wood and Igor Jesus ahead of him in the attacking pecking order. The competition for places raised concerns about whether Awoniyi would receive enough regular playing time.
Newly promoted Coventry City subsequently emerged as a strong destination for the striker, with the Championship club reportedly moving closer to completing a permanent transfer.
Coventry are understood to have reached an agreement with Nottingham Forest for a deal worth around £17 million, reportedly equivalent to approximately N31 billion.
Awoniyi is believed to have undergone and passed his medical ahead of the proposed move to the CBS Arena.
Following his substitution against Brest, the striker reportedly received a guard of honour from his Nottingham Forest teammates before acknowledging the supporters at the City Ground.
Glasner confirmed the gesture and suggested that it was linked to Awoniyi’s impending departure.
“The striker received a guard of honour from the Forest squad as he exited the field at the City Ground,” Glasner told Forest TV.
The manager also praised the relationship between Awoniyi, his teammates and the club’s supporters, highlighting the applause and appreciation shown to the striker.
“There was a lot of applause and gratitude for Taiwo’s contributions over the past couple of years,” Glasner said.
Awoniyi will now look to make a fresh start at Coventry if the transfer is completed. A move could provide the Nigerian forward with the regular playing time needed to rebuild his confidence and rediscover his best form.
The potential transfer would bring an end to Awoniyi’s spell at Nottingham Forest and begin a new chapter in his professional career.
