Tinubu Pays Tribute To Fasoranti, Calls Him One Of Awolowo’s Last Great Titans
President Bola Tinubu pays tribute to late Afenifere leader Reuben Fasoranti, recognising his legacy of public service, democratic activism and political influence.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid tribute to late Afenifere leader Reuben Fasoranti, describing him as one of the prominent figures associated with the political legacy of the late nationalist, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
Fasoranti, who died at the age of 100, was a respected elder statesman, educationist and pro-democracy activist whose political career spanned several decades.
Tinubu had previously praised the late Afenifere leader for his commitment to education, democratic governance, justice and national development. In a tribute marking Fasoranti’s 100th birthday in May 2026, the President described him as a symbol of integrity, principled leadership and dedicated service to Nigeria.
The President also highlighted Fasoranti’s connection to Awolowo’s progressive political tradition, recalling his involvement in the defunct Action Group and the Unity Party of Nigeria.
Fasoranti served as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983 under the administration of the late Governor Michael Adekunle Ajasin.
Beyond his political career, he contributed to education as a teacher and school founder. He also became a leading voice in Afenifere, advocating for Yoruba interests, democratic governance and political reforms.
During Nigeria’s years of military rule, Fasoranti was among those who called for the restoration of democracy. His influence continued through his leadership of Afenifere and participation in national discussions on governance and constitutional restructuring.
Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa announced Fasoranti’s death on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, describing him as a symbol of wisdom, integrity and selfless service.
The governor said Fasoranti’s guidance and principled positions on justice and good governance would be greatly missed by Ondo State, Yorubaland and Nigeria.
His death marks the passing of a significant figure in the political tradition associated with Awolowo and a generation of leaders who shaped political discourse in southwestern Nigeria.
