Tinubu Mourns Olu Jacobs, Calls Him Creative Industry Giant
President Bola Tinubu has mourned veteran Nollywood actor Olu Jacobs, describing him as a towering figure whose decades-long career helped shape and professionalise Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
President Bola Tinubu has expressed condolences over the death of veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, who died at the age of 84.
Jacobs’ death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, on Wednesday. In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described the late actor as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished performers, whose career spanned theatre, television and film in Nigeria and abroad.
The President said Jacobs contributed significantly to the development and professionalisation of Nigeria’s entertainment industry, while inspiring generations of actors and filmmakers through his talent, discipline and dedication.
Tinubu also praised the actor’s ability to bring depth, dignity and authenticity to the characters he portrayed, saying his performances earned him recognition in Nigeria and internationally.
“He was a giant of the Nigerian creative industry. His passing is a great loss to Nigeria, the African film industry and the global community of lovers of the performing arts,” the President said.
Tinubu noted that Jacobs’ body of work would continue to influence future generations, adding that the actor played an important role in shaping Nigeria’s cultural identity, global image and creative economy.
According to the statement, Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London before establishing a career in British television and international film. He later returned to Nigeria, where he became one of the major figures in the country’s film industry.
Jacobs received several industry honours during his career and was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic.
Tinubu extended his condolences to Jacobs’ wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, their children, relatives, colleagues and members of the wider creative community.
