Tinubu Condemns Killing Of Katsina Islamic Preacher, Orders Probe
President Bola Tinubu has condemned the killing of Islamic preacher Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka in Katsina State and called for an investigation.
President Bola Tinubu has condemned the killing of prominent Islamic preacher Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka in Katsina State, urging security agencies to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
The cleric was killed alongside his associate, Adamu Abubakar, by unidentified gunmen in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area on Monday evening, October 26, 2026.
According to the Katsina State Police Command, the attack occurred at about 7:30 p.m. in front of Masussuka’s residence, when two armed men riding on a motorcycle reportedly opened fire on the victims.
Both men sustained fatal gunshot injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel confirmed their deaths.
Tinubu condemned the attack and directed security agencies to intensify efforts to identify, track down and apprehend the perpetrators. The call for an investigation comes amid renewed concerns about attacks on residents and community figures in parts of northern Nigeria.
The Katsina State Police Commissioner, Ali Umar Fage, has deployed tactical and operational teams to support the investigation and pursue the fleeing suspects.
Police spokesperson Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu said investigations had commenced, while efforts were being intensified to establish the circumstances surrounding the killings and identify those responsible.
The motive for the attack has not been officially established, and police had not announced any arrests as of the latest reports.
Masussuka was known for his Qur’an-centred teachings and advocacy for peaceful coexistence, interfaith dialogue and understanding among communities. He also spoke against violent extremism and radicalisation.
Amnesty International condemned the killing and called on Nigerian authorities to conduct an immediate and effective investigation, warning that those responsible must be held accountable. The organisation also said the cleric had faced threats and intimidation during his lifetime.
The killing has raised concern among residents, religious followers and human rights advocates, particularly given the potential consequences of violence against religious leaders who promote peaceful coexistence.
Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda also condemned the incident, describing Masussuka as a voice for peace and interfaith harmony. He urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies and provide credible information that could assist the investigation.
The authorities have called for restraint as security operatives work to establish the facts surrounding the attack and ensure that those responsible face prosecution.
