Tinubu Approves Lifetime Salaries for Retired Immigration Chiefs

President Bola Tinubu has approved lifetime salaries for retired Comptrollers-General and Deputy Comptrollers-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has disclosed.

Tunji-Ojo made the announcement on Friday at the closing ceremony of the Specialised Border Control and Immigration Management System training held at the Immigration Headquarters in Abuja.

He commended the President for addressing promotion backlogs across services under the ministry, saying no fewer than 50,000 personnel had received promotions within three years.

The minister also said the administration had expanded recruitment, with at least 40,000 new recruits taken in at once, while salary increases and improvements in hazard and peculiar allowances had been approved.

On the welfare of retired officers, Tunji-Ojo said former Comptrollers-General of Immigration had previously received pensions of about ₦130,000, which he described as inadequate.

He said the President subsequently approved lifetime salaries for retired Comptrollers-General and Deputy Comptrollers-General, describing the decision as part of efforts to improve the welfare of personnel who had served the country.

The minister urged officers of the immigration service to reciprocate the administration’s support by performing their duties effectively and ensuring that Nigerians received better services.

He described Tinubu’s policies as investments intended to strengthen public institutions beyond the President’s tenure, saying the administration was focused on establishing systems that would continue to function in the future.

Tunji-Ojo said the government’s broader reforms were aimed at improving institutional performance and ensuring that public servants had the support required to carry out their responsibilities.

The announcement forms part of the Federal Government’s wider efforts to reform the interior services, including immigration, through improved personnel welfare, recruitment, training and border management.

The minister’s remarks came as the Nigeria Immigration Service continues to strengthen its border control and migration management capabilities through specialised training and digital systems.
