Three Ships Hit by Unknown Projectiles in Strait of Hormuz
Three vessels, including a crude oil tanker and an LNG tanker, were struck by unknown projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre.
Three vessels were struck by unknown projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre UKMTO.
The British maritime agency said a crude oil tanker, an LNG tanker and a third vessel were each hit by an unknown projectile. It did not provide further details on the incidents or identify the source of the projectiles.
The incidents occurred amid the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States, with the Strait of Hormuz at the centre of the dispute over maritime traffic and energy exports.
The strategic waterway is one of the world's most important shipping routes, with about one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies passing through it before the conflict began.
Since the outbreak of the conflict, Iran has restricted the movement of commercial vessels through the strait and fired on ships it accused of attempting unauthorised crossings.
The United States has responded by imposing a counterblockade on Iranian ports in an effort to restrict Tehran's oil exports.
The latest incidents have added to concerns over the safety of commercial shipping through the waterway, although the maritime agency did not immediately disclose the extent of damage to the affected vessels or whether there were casualties.
The UKMTO is continuing to monitor maritime activity in the area and has advised vessels operating in the vicinity to exercise caution.
