Terrorists Plot Attacks on Osun Worship Centres, Markets
DSS alerts Muslim and Christian leaders to alleged terrorist plans targeting worship centres, markets and public gatherings in Osun.
The Department of State Services has alerted Muslim and Christian leaders in Osun State to an alleged plot by terrorists to attack places of worship, markets and other public gathering centres.
The warning was issued during separate meetings between the DSS and religious leaders in Osogbo, where officials reportedly advised communities to strengthen security measures and remain vigilant.
The intelligence reportedly indicated that terrorists were planning to expand their activities into the southern part of Nigeria, particularly the South-West, with the aim of creating fear and disrupting preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The President of the Osun State Muslim Community, Alhaji Mustapha Olawuyi, confirmed that the meeting with the DSS took place and said religious leaders had been given preventive measures to help protect worshippers.
Muslim leaders were reportedly advised to be cautious about vehicles parked close to mosques and congregations, while vigilance was also urged around commercial motorcycles and unfamiliar individuals.
They were further encouraged to provide night guards at mosques and remain alert during religious gatherings.
The Osun State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor John Adeleke, also confirmed a meeting with the DSS.
According to the Christian leaders, the security agency warned that terrorists had allegedly mapped parts of Osun State and could target locations where large numbers of people gather.
Potential targets reportedly include churches, mosques, markets, schools, clubs and viewing centres.
Church leaders were advised to strengthen security around their premises, discourage unknown vehicles from parking near worship centres and exercise caution over night programmes.
The warnings come amid heightened security concerns ahead of the 2027 general elections, with authorities and community leaders increasingly urging residents to remain vigilant.
Religious leaders were also encouraged to educate members of their communities about the need to report suspicious activities and cooperate with security agencies.
The DSS alert has heightened calls for religious institutions, market associations, schools and other public facilities across Osun State to review their security arrangements and take precautionary measures against potential threats.
