Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have attacked a military formation in Mairari community, Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State, with some soldiers feared killed during the assault.
The attack reportedly occurred around midnight on Tuesday and lasted for more than two hours, according to local sources.
The Chairman of Guzamala Local Government Area, Mr Umar Sheriff, confirmed the incident, saying the attackers specifically targeted the military post.
Sheriff said he had not received confirmed casualty figures but noted that no civilians were killed in the attack.
He described the assault as unusually severe for the area in recent times, adding that the military had successfully repelled the attackers.
The chairman said the situation had returned to calm and that he planned to visit the community on Thursday to assess the impact of the incident.
However, local sources said there were casualties on both sides, although the figures remained unverified.
One source said it was rumoured that seven soldiers had been killed, but stressed that the information had not been independently confirmed.
The attack reportedly caused tension among residents, with heavy gunfire heard during the prolonged confrontation.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Acting Military Information Officer of the North-East Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, Captain Mohammed Goni, were unsuccessful as of the time of reporting.
The military had yet to release an official statement confirming the number of casualties or providing further details about the attack.
