Team Nigeria Lands in Morocco Ahead of Davis Cup Tie

Nigeria’s Davis Cup team has arrived in Rabat, Morocco, ahead of their World Group II tie against the North Africans scheduled for September 19 and 20.

The Nigerian delegation departed the country in the early hours of Monday and arrived in Morocco at about 11:25am. The team will continue preparations in Rabat ahead of the crucial international tennis encounter.

The squad comprises former national number one Daniel Adeleye, current top-ranked Nigerian player Canice Abua, Michael Emmanuel and Abubakar Yusuf. They are joined by coach Benson Ishicheli and officials of the Nigeria Tennis Federation.

The players had spent more than a week in camp at the Lagos Country Club, where the coaching team focused on improving their fitness, match readiness and overall preparation for the tie.

Nigeria secured their place in World Group II after defeating Uzbekistan 3-1 at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club in February.

The victory came after the tie was level at 1-1 following the opening singles matches. Nigeria subsequently moved ahead after Abua and Emmanuel secured an important doubles victory.

Adeleye then completed the victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Uzbekistan’s Ilya Ignatov, who was making his Davis Cup debut.

The result boosted Nigeria’s confidence and helped the team advance in the Davis Cup competition.

Morocco, meanwhile, dropped into World Group II after losing their World Group I play-off against Colombia.

The upcoming tie will be played at the Union Sportive des Cheminots de Tennis du Maroc in Rabat, where Nigeria will aim to continue the momentum gained from their victory over Uzbekistan.

The Nigerian team is expected to use the remaining days before the tie to adjust to the Moroccan conditions and clay-court surface while fine-tuning their tactical preparations.

Coach Ishicheli will also be looking to ensure that the players remain physically and mentally prepared for what is expected to be a competitive encounter.

Nigeria’s participation in the World Group II stage represents another opportunity for the country to strengthen its position in international tennis.

The team will hope that a strong performance in Morocco can extend its Davis Cup campaign and further improve Nigeria’s standing in the competition.
