Tax Reform Has Reduced Burden On Low-Income Earners — Revenue Board
Revenue board says tax reforms have eased financial pressure on low-income earners through targeted reliefs and changes to taxation.
The Nigeria Revenue Service has said recent tax reforms have reduced the financial burden on low-income earners while creating a more equitable taxation system.
The agency said the reforms were designed to protect vulnerable taxpayers and ensure that individuals with lower incomes are not subjected to the same tax pressure as higher-income earners.
The changes form part of the Federal Government’s broader tax reform programme aimed at improving revenue mobilisation, simplifying the tax system and promoting fairness among taxpayers.
Under the revised framework, tax obligations are structured to provide greater relief for people earning lower incomes, while taxpayers with higher earnings are expected to contribute more to public finances.
The revenue authority said the reforms were not intended simply to increase government collections but to create a taxation system that is more responsive to the economic realities of Nigerians.
It added that improving compliance and widening the tax base would be important to achieving sustainable revenue growth without placing excessive pressure on citizens who can least afford additional financial obligations.
The reforms also seek to simplify tax administration and reduce complexities that have historically made compliance difficult for individuals and businesses.
Officials have maintained that a simpler system would encourage more taxpayers to participate voluntarily while improving transparency and reducing opportunities for evasion.
The revenue service said the benefits of the reforms should become more visible as the new framework is implemented and taxpayers gain a clearer understanding of their obligations and available reliefs.
The agency has also emphasised the importance of public education, noting that taxpayers need accurate information about the new rules to understand how the changes affect their incomes and businesses.
The reforms have generated considerable public discussion, particularly over concerns about the cost of living and the impact of taxation on households and businesses.
However, the revenue authority said the revised system was developed with provisions intended to shield lower-income Nigerians from excessive tax liabilities.
It said the objective was to establish a fairer relationship between taxpayers and government while strengthening the resources available for public services and national development.
The agency urged Nigerians to comply with the new tax requirements and obtain information through official channels rather than relying on misleading interpretations of the reforms.
The revenue board maintained that protecting low-income earners remains an important principle of the ongoing reforms and that the new framework seeks to distribute tax responsibilities according to taxpayers’ ability to pay.
It said the ultimate goal was a fairer, simpler and more efficient tax system capable of supporting Nigeria’s development without disproportionately burdening vulnerable citizens.
